Provenance: The merchant banker Louis Huth (1821-1905) of Frederick Huth & Co; sold Christies April 24th 1925 (lot 24) by the executors of his widow's Helen's (nee Ogilvy) estate and bought back by the family; thence by direct descent to the current owner.
The Huths owned major works by artists as distinguished as John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough, William Hogarth, Sir Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs and James Ward. A sale following Louis's death in May 1905 realised over £50,000 from 145 lots, the equivalent of almost £30m today.
