ST FRANCIS XAVIER AND THE CURSING OF THE PORTUGUESE GOVERNOR
Oil on canvas
44 x 33cm.
* This curious subject relates the story of Francis Xavier seeking a meeting with Dom Alvaro, the Portuguese Governor, whilst in Malacca in 1553. The Governor refused Francis Xavier access to the Santa Cruz (seen to the right), so Francis had to wade through muddy waters before reaching a stone from which he cursed the Governor for his lack of co-operation. It is said that the Governor died of leprosy, possibly as a result. Francis appears to be dressed as a Franciscan rather than his usual white surplus and black habit.
