19THC BRACKET CLOCK - RAILWAY INTEREST, HIGHLAND RAILWAY a late 19thc bracket clock, presented to David Jones of the Highland Railway in 1896. An ebonised bracket clock with a 5 1/2" silvered chapter ring, beneath a subsidiery fast/slow dial. With pierced spandrels on a brass 8 day twin train movement, striking half hourly and on two gongs. With gilt metal mounts and paw feet. With a an inscribed brass plaque, 'Presented to David Jones Esq Locomotive Engineer, by the Employees of the Locomotive Carriage Wagon Departments, Highland Railway, 31st October 1896. 17ins (43cms) high *David Jones (1834-1906) was born in Manchester where his father was an engineer. He became Locomotive Superintendent for the Highland Railway in Scotland, and was credited with the design of the first British 4-6-0, an arrangement that had it's origins in the United States. 15 of the Jones Goods Class Locomotives were built, and one survived and is now housed at the Riverside Museum In Glasgow. He retired in 1896 after a scalding experienced during tests, which robbed him of use of his left leg. This clock was obviously given to him on his retirement by the employees, as a mark of respect for his time served with them.
