Lot 2421
GOTHIC OAK AND ELM PEW,
19th century, with an oak panel back and ends, a one piece elm seat and exposed pegs to one end, with an oak hymn book rail on the back and 2 cushions, height 89cm, length 136cm
Footnote and Provenance: formally in the Church of the Holy Trinity in Walton, Somerset. The church was rebuilt in 1866 and the pew probably dates to this time. It was designed by John Norton, an architect who was greatly influenced by the work of Augustus Pugin. He designed many churches in Somerset and the extensive remodelling of Tyntesfield House near Bristol.
The pew is flat at one end and only has exposed pegs to the other as it was designed to fit against a wall.
