‡HILDA DAVIS (Fl.c.1935-1960) LORD HAW HAW Signed and dated 1940, also signed and inscribed verso, oil on canvas 61.5 x 74.5cm. Exhibited: Bournemouth, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery, Exhibition of Works by Eminent Living Artists, March-June 1945 (label verso) * William Joyce (1906-1946) was found guilty in 1945 of having broadcast Nazi propaganda to Britain during the War. He was American-born but had strong fascist sympathies and was hanged in 1946, the last person to be executed in Britain on a conviction for anything other than murder. His nickname arose from the affected upper-class accent that he used when starting his traitorous broadcasts with `Germany calling, Germany calling..`.
