MARTIN SNAPE (1852-1930)
THE FERRET-HUTCH
Signed, bears inscribed label and a letter from the artist (March 10th 1912) on the modern backboard, watercolour and bodycolour
32 x 43.5cm.
Exhibited: possibly London, The Royal Academy, 1894, no.1137 (or possibly a variant of this work in oil?)
* The letter, from Spring Garden Cottage, Gosport, reads Dear Sir, The picture was painted from the `Ferret Hutch` at Rookesbury Park, Wickham Hants about 1889 - it was in the RA the next year, I think, under that title. I forget the price;£30 but it was not sold. Some fourteen years ago, it was sold at Christies with another, but I was told it was a day of low prices. I forget how much it brought but it was very much less than it should. I do not know its subsequent history. I am sorry to be so vague about dates and prices, but I seldom keep catalogues and never a diary. I am glad the work has fallen into such good hands, where it evidently finds its means of appreciation. Yours faithfully Martin Snape
