Lot 1835
THOMAS HEARNE (1744-1817)
APPLEBY CASTLE, CUMBERLAND
Signed and dated 1781, watercolour and pencil with pen and ink
29.5 x 45.5cm.
* This idyllic rural scene in Westmoreland was a popular theme in Hearne's work. He first visited the region with Sir George Beaumont in 1778 and the prime version of the subject is believed to be the one in the collection at Tate Britain. Further autograph variants were sold at Woolley & Wallis, Salisbury (June 5th 2013, lot 134, 22 x 28cm, dated 1780) and at Sothbeys London (June 12th 2003, lot 132, 30 x 45cm). This lot may be another variant, sold at Sothebys on March 30th 1983, lot 156, that was also described as being signed and dated 1781.
