An early 20th century handmade rose bowl with a hemishperical bowl and a corded wire border, the spreading foot with wave-like decoration below a frieze of regular linked wire coils, inscribed "AILEEN"* on one side and "1933" on the other side, each within ribbon-like formal scrolls, hallmarked London 1932 and struck also with Murphy's Falcon Studio Mark; 8.25" (21 cms) diameter; 26.1 oz
*Aileen Mary Fox (1907-2005) pioneering archeologist who explored the Iron Age and Roman worlds and was probably the last member of the generation of archeologists who shaped the modern discipline in this country. In 1933 she married pre-historian Cyril Fox (later knighted for his development of the National Museum of Wales). Aileen's delightful autobiography. "A Pioneering Archeologist" appeared in 2000.
**This rose bowl, along with Aileen's engagement ring (also made by Murphy) both featured in the H.G. Murphy exhibition at the Goldsmiths Hall, London in April 2005 entitled "At the sign of the Falcon".
