At the beginning of the twentieth century, several playwrights including George Bernard Shaw and Harley Granville Barker led a challenge to the system of statutory theatre censorship. They were supported by Robert Harcourt, M.P., whose parliamentary interventions persuaded the Prime Minster, H.H. Asquith, to establish an investigatory committee in 1909.
