The Great Storm of 1703 struck on November 23, 1703. Contemporary reports note that London lost over 2000 chimney stacks, while the New Forest lost more than 4000 oaks. On Goodwin Sands, more than 1000 seamen lost their lives. The Church of England declared that the storm was God's vengeance for the sins of the nation, while the Government declared January 19th, 1704 a day of fasting.
