Loosely inserted are two letters from the author addressed to 'Nanny', the first discussing health and publishing matters, 'My first two books will be out in paperback the year after next - Pan Books. This one is set in Somerset for a change (the village is Roadwater, but moved nearer the moor and the topography somewhat attuned)...' and the second informing the recipient of a secret, 'Herewith the book I promised for your birthday [A Stitch in Time]. I will be very indiscreet and tell you what is supposed to be a secret until it is announced on Dec. 6th... which is that it has won a literary award - The Whitbread Award.'
