Gibbon, Edward. The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, volumes 1-5 [of 6] only, first edition, half-titles, engraved portrait frontispiece, 3 folding engraved maps, errata leaves in vols.1-3, some spotting, frontispiece offset, occasional browning, contemporary calf, worn, joints cracked, 4to, London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1776-1788 The state of the first volume does not correspond to the descriptions given by Norton (1940). The preface is dated 'Feb. 1, 1776' and X4 is a cancel leaf, signed. However, Rrr2, Sss4, a4 and b2 are not cancels; all are signed. The errata leaf has corrections to p.561, and for the notes to p.lxvii.
