Mary Hanover (1723-1772), the daughter of King George II and Caroline of Ansbach, married Frederick II, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel in 1740. They had three sons, William I (b.1743), Charles (b.1744) and Frederick (b.1747). Charles distinguished himself with a military career in Denmark, rising to become Commander of the Royal Guard, Governor-General of Norway and Governor of Schleswig-Holstein. He died in 1836 of natural causes.
