Read, Mrs. E.H. A group of sixty-four slides documenting travels in western Tibet and Kashmir between 1928-1936, including scenes of village life, sherpas, expeditions, mountains and glaciers, religious ceremonies and family, each 81mm square, without captions, in wooden case PROVENANCE: Mrs. E. H. Read, thence by descent. RARE. Mrs E.H. Read (1898-1986) was a skilled photographer and matron with the Central Asian Mission. She met her husband, the doctor Alfred Frank Charles Read and author of Balti Grammar (1934), while they were both working in Srinagar in the mid-1920s. Their commitment to the local communities was widely respected, providing rare access for Mrs. Read's portraiture and candid images of village life. Her work as a photographer was noted and often featured in the Illustrated London News. They lived and worked in the region for many years, before returning the the United Kingdom permanently in 1945. It would appear this group of slides may have been used for lectures, but no other examples are known to have survived.

Contains seven folding maps of India used by Mrs E. H. Read on her various excursions.
