JAMES HAVARD (American, b.1937)
GHOST DANCE SHIRT (no.389), 1977
Signed and dated and titled verso, acrylic on canvas, unframed
152.5 x 116.5cm.
* Havard came to prominence in the 1970's with the Abstract Illusionist movement, using a technique where brushstrokes were painted with a faux `shadow` underneath to suggest that they were floating. Inspired as much by children's drawings as by the creative `Art Brut` urge of artists such as Jean Dubuffet, Havard works with an exuberant application of creamy brushwork and energetic scribbles derived from the Expressionism of fellow American Cy Twombly. His work has been exhibited throughout America as well as in Europe and Scandinavia. The Collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Guggenheim, the Los Angeles County Museum, the Smithsonian and the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm all have examples of Havard's works from his long and prolific career.
