GEORGE RICHMOND, RA (1809-1896) PORTRAIT OF THE HON. NORMAN LISTER MELVILLE (1839-1923), AGED 7 The boy depicted full length, wearing a smock, holding a cricket bat, standing before stumps, signed and dated Geo. Richmond dela.t 1845, watercolour and bodycolour, with pencil and heightened with scratching out 60.5 x 38cm. * A note from the artist is affixed to the backboard: March 2d - June 1846/ I am sorry to be obliged / to leave home before your return/ this coat for Norman/ and remaining .../ yr most truly obliged/ Geo. Rich (some of this inscription is indistinct) Literature: Raymond Lister, George Richmond (London, 1981), p.166, no.65 * The sitter was the fourth child of John Thornton Leslie Melville and his (second) wife Sophia Thornton., later 11th Earl and Countess of Leven and Melville, who were close friends of the artist. They kept Richmond busy with commissions from 1835-1873 and the artist produced no fewer than fifteen portraits of the family
