MARITIME INTEREST:-
A George III gold mounted wooden toothpick box of plain rectangular form, the interior with a mirror and a plaque, inscribed "Gift of Vice Admiral Sir Jas. Saumarez"*, unmarked c.1800; 2.75" (7 cms) long
*Vice Admiral James Saumarez (1757-1836), a much decorated and very experienced naval man from St. Peter Port, Guernsey, who entered the Navy at the age of 13. He was promoted to Lieutenant for bravery during the attack on Charleston, South Carolina in June 1776 and played successful roles with French Revelutionary and Napoleonic wars and the Battle of the Nile. He was created a Baronet in 1801 & died in Guernsey 1836.
