Strong Results in our Fine Art Sale...
1st August 2025
Our last Fine Art Sale saw enthusiastic bidding and strong results across a diverse range of categories, reflecting the continued confidence and interest of collectors, connoisseurs, and investors alike. Among the highlights were three standout lots that performed exceptionally well, underscoring the market’s appetite for quality and rarity.
One of the most notable results came from a striking Chinese Sancai glazed pottery horse, catalogued as Tang Dynasty or later. Standing at 47cm high and measuring approximately 46cm in length, the piece was of impressive scale. It sold for a remarkable £6,875 (including buyer’s premium). This result speaks to the enduring appeal of Tang-style sancai wares, prized for their vibrant tri-colour glazes and connection to China’s golden age of ceramic artistry.
Equally strong was the performance of a set of six George IV Irish silver soup plates by William Nolan, Dublin 1821. These gadrooned-edge plates, measuring 9.8 inches in diameter and weighing over 117 troy ounces in total, carried a modest estimate of £2,000. The set attracted competitive bidding and ultimately achieved £5,500 (including premium). Early 19th-century Irish silver, especially by named makers, continues to prove highly desirable at auction.
Another standout was a Gauge 1 steam locomotive and tender, named Blandford Forum, built in 1986 by Barrett Engineering. This finely engineered model, based on the West Country Class with streamlined casing and operating at a boiler pressure of 80psi, came with display track and detailed documentation. The locomotive exceeded expectations by fetching £2,375 (including premium), above its £1,500 estimate. The result highlights the strong collector market for precision live steam models and high-quality railway memorabilia.
