A rare portrait by celebrated British artist Gerald Leslie Brockhurst R.A. achieved £72,500* in Lawrences Auctioneers' June Fine Art Sale, following competitive bidding from collectors online and on the telephones.
Portrait of Mrs Alexander Frank Stanley Clarke, depicting Vivien Antonia Bligh St. George (1912–1975), was exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1935 and remained in its original handcrafted frame made by the artist. The portrait was also illustrated in several leading society publications of the period, adding to its exceptional provenance.
One of the foremost society portrait painters of the 1930s and 1940s, Brockhurst counted the Duchess of Windsor, Marlene Dietrich and Merle Oberon among his distinguished sitters. Renowned for his elegant style, he later enjoyed a highly successful career in New York, cementing his reputation as one of Britain's most accomplished portrait artists.
The portrait proved to be one of the highlights of the June Fine Art Sale, attracting strong interest from collectors throughout the bidding. Its combination of Royal Academy exhibition history, distinguished provenance and outstanding condition generated significant competition before it was bought for £72,500*

Competitive bidding from both online participants and telephone bidders helped drive the painting to a strong final price of £72,500."
