Peter Collingwood Weaves His Magic at Auction...
15th May 2026
There is a quiet power in the work of master weaver. A balance of precision, texture and movement that transformed weaving into an art form admired around the world. This June, that artistry comes to auction as Lawrences Auctioneers present two exceptional examples of his celebrated Macrogauze wall hangings.
Widely regarded as the most influential British artist weaver of the last half century, Collingwood combined traditional craft with striking visual abstraction. His pioneering Macrogauze works, with their amazing structure and sculptural presence, became internationally recognised for their innovation and beauty. Beyond his own creations, Collingwood was also a respected author and teacher whose generosity and knowledge inspired generations of textile artists and students.
The two wall hangings coming under the hammer in Crewkerne are both signed by the artist and display the distinctive depth and elegance for which his work is renowned. Consigned by a Bath vendor, the pieces were originally purchased by the vendor's parents during the 1970s - a time when Collingwood's reputation was rapidly growing both in Britain and abroad.
With their subtle variations in colour and form, the works capture the timeless appeal of Collingwood's weaving.
The hangings are guided at £4,000-6,000 and £3,000-5,000 respectively, and will feature in the June Fine Art Sale from Wednesday 16th June during the two day sale.
