At Lawrences Auctioneers, we are privileged to handle many remarkable artifacts, but few tell a story as compelling as that of Marsie Taylor. This May, collectors will have the opportunity to bid on an extraordinary medal set belonging to a woman of WWII, a hero of both the Blitz and the D-Day landings.
From the Blitz to the War Room: Marsie Taylor’s Legacy
Marsie Taylor’s British Empire Medal (BEM) was awarded for her bravery during the London Blitz. On October 15, 1940, she was part of the emergency response team working to rescue civilians trapped inside Morley College, which had been devastated by a German air raid. Despite the risk of total collapse, Taylor and her team worked for over 10 hours, saving lives under unimaginable conditions.
Her service did not end there. She later joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRENS) and was assigned to Norfolk House and later Southwick House, where she worked on Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy. As part of General Eisenhower’s staff, she played a critical role in the planning and coordination of the largest amphibious invasion in history.

In 2016, Taylor became the first woman to receive the Legion d’Honneur from the French ambassador, recognising her role in liberating France. She passed away in 2020, but her legacy remains an inspiration.
