A Life of Steam and Shared Joy...
26th January 2026
This February, a remarkable steam locomotive will be auctioned at Lawrences Auctioneers. Not just as a collectible, but as a testament to a lifetime of passion.
Offered in the Fine Art Sale is a large 5-inch gauge live steam model of the GWR Torquay Manor, complete with its tender and a section of track for display. Beautifully engineered and meticulously cared for, the locomotive was owned for more than four decades by a Somerset gentleman whose love of steam engineering began long before it became a collector's pursuit.
From the 1980s onwards, the locomotive was regularly run and enjoyed at the Westlands & Yeovil District Engineering Society, where it was admired not only for its presence, but for the dedication behind it. For its owner, this was far more than a model. It was a source of friendship and quiet joy.
Following his passing, the family have chosen to consign the locomotive to auction, hoping it will find a new owner who will cherish it as deeply as he did.
"Large live steam locomotives are very sought after by collectors," says Lawrences auctioneer Simon Jones. "and we would expect a great deal of interest in the sale."
Estimated at £4,000-£6,000, the locomotive will be offered for sale on the second day of our two day Fine Art Sale on the 10th & 11th Feb, ready to begin its next chapter.
