THE FOUNDLING, NIGHT; SNOWSCAPE
Two, the former initialled, each titled, each pencil, drawn on the tissue guard (or upon the back) of a photogravure plate
Images 15 x 21.5cm and 12.5 x 17cm approx. (2)
* These sketches were discovered in a book of Italian art that Nicholson had lent to pupils of Didcot Grammar School for Girls, circa 1939. The artist left a note asking for the book to be duly returned to him at Apple Tree Yard (his studio in St. James's in London that he used from 1917 until it was bombed in 1940). To avoid any doubt about this expectation, the reverse of `Snowscape` is inscribed For God's sake/ return this/ William Nicholson/ 11 Apple Tree Yard/ St James's/ SW. However, the request was not honoured and the book was sold during a clearance of the school's library in the 1990s.
