| 1911 | WINIFRED WALKER (Fl.c.1909-1965) ALL THE PLANTS OF THE BIBLE One hundred and one watercolours from the original complement of one hundred and twenty one (only one hundred and fourteen were published in monochrome in the first edition of 1957), each signed and inscribed with the Latin and Hebrew names and the relevant citation from the Bible, watercolour and pencil, all unframed Each 34 x 25.5cm. * For ten years, Miss Walker studied and researched the plants mentioned in the Holy Scriptures and, with the assistance of pressed specimens from the Herbarium at the University of California at Berkeley (where she was artist in residence), she illustrated over 120 flowers, weeds, crops and fruits and was careful to record them all life size. From the definitive list of such plants compiled by the New York Botanical Garden in 1941, we find the familiar apple, juniper, mint, sycamore and mustard. In addition, one finds the less familiar burning bush, the strange vine, the goodly fruit and the rolling thing. The book was first published in 1957 with a further edition in colour in 1979 and a copy of the latter edition accompanies this lot. £700-1000 |

| 1913 | WINIFRED WALKER (Fl.c.1909-1965) THE PLANTS OF SHAKESPEARE One hundred and fifty five watercolours from the original complement of one hundred of fifty published illustrations, each signed and inscribed with the Latin name and the relevant citation from Shakespeare, watercolour, some with pen and ink Each 34 x 25cm. * This ambitious work depicted in life size all the flowers, fruits, trees, crops and herbs mentioned in Shakespeare's works. Over ten years' of painstaking research went into the book. Eighty examples were exhibited in Stratford in 1939 and the artist was invited to take her collection to America later that year. The pictures were destroyed when her ship, the Athenia, was torpedoed and this lot is a recreation of that first set. Miss Walker published Flowers of Shakespeare during her lifetime but The Plants of Shakespeare was not published until 1984. The artist received a gold Grenfell Medal from The Royal Horticultural Society in 1951 for an exhibition of works relating to this project (that medal and a silver medal awarded in 1925 accompany this lot). £800-1200 |
