BARA CREEK, NEAR WOLLONGONG, ILLAWARA DISTRICT, NEW SOUTH WALES
Bears signature and dated J.M.W.Turner 1810 lower left, watercolour, unframed
23.5 x 34cm.
* This drawing can be dated to July 1835 by comparison with pencil studies of the same view in the Mitchell Library in Sydney. Martens sold a view of Bara Creek to George Macleay (son of the Colonial Secretary in Sydney) and another in March 1838 to his friend and fellow artist Samuel Elyard. It is probable that this picture is one of those two (the other being sold at Sothebys Melbourne in August 1992).

EXMOUTH
Signed and dated May 1831 verso, watercolour with scratching out, unframed
30 x 42cm.

Martens had sailed on the Hyacinth from Plymouth and was destined for India but was tempted instead to join Darwin's British South American Expedition and travelled on the Indus to meet the ship in July 1833. His book, Journal of a Voyage from England to Australia 1833-1835, records his travels.
