FRANCES HODGKINS (1869-1947)
LESSON DEMONSTRATION
Watercolour and pencil, bears later inscription Frances Hodgkins/[Lesson Demonstration] on the support sheet, unframed
Image 12 x 18.5cm. approx.
Provenance: Acquired from the artist by Miss (Dorothy) Jane Saunders and Miss A. Mabel Shaw; and thence by descent.

To be offered with a quantity of ephemera relating to Frances Hodgkins, including letters from her biographer E. H. McCormick; a book on John Piper signed by Myfanwy Piper; exhibition invitations and catalogues; and Jane Saunders's personal copies of books relating to Hodgkins, some with inscriptions.

Hodgkins lived in Manchester from 1922-1927 and worked as a designer for the Calico Printers Association. She lodged with two friends, Jane Saunders and Hannah Ritchie, who were both art teachers at Manchester School for Girls. Hodgkins had a close relationship with Saunders, which probably ended by 1931 although they remained very good friends. Mabel Shaw taught music and elocution at the school from 1930-1947. She and Saunders left Manchester in 1947 and bought a cottage at Zeals on the Wiltshire/Dorset border.

Hodgkins is known to have given art lessons at Manchester School for Girls at the invitation of Saunders and Ritchie during the mid-1920's. This watercolour sketch may date from that time or it could be later, perhaps a personal demonstration to Saunders or Shaw, both of whom were keen amateur artists.

Saunders and Shaw acquired a significant collection of Hodgkins' paintings, including some of her best-known works, and in later years made generous donations to the Tate Gallery in London and elsewhere (some of the correspondence with Alan Bowness in this lot relates to these donations).
