The kettle was made in 1747, the year that Edward Wakelin went into partnership with George Wickes. The Wickes & Wakelin journals record an account for Robert Balch as debtor and together with a quantity of other silver, he purchased this kettle on 2nd June 1748. The journal gives the weight of the silver items (77:16:8/3 for a tea kettle & lamp) and the cost of engraving. Incidentally the weight of the silver is still correct to within the ounce. It seems likely that Robert Balch's order for the silver can be tied to his marriage to Susan Everard.£2500-3000

*John Burt (1691-1745), son of William & Elizabeth Burt who was born in Boston on January 5th 1691-92. He married Abigail Cheever in 1714 and three of their sons, William (1726-52), Samuel (1724-54) and Benjamin (1729-1805) followed in their father's footsteps and became silversmiths. John Burt was constable, tithing man and clerk of the market and left a considerable estate valued at £6460.4.9. There seems to be a divide as to whom Burt served his apprenticeship with, largely due to a lack of real evidence. Likely candidates seem to be either John Dixwell (1680-1725) or John Coney (1652-1722) who is considered by many as the greatest American silversmith. One of Coney's apprentices was Appollos de Rivoire who changed his name to Paul Revere and was father to the Paul Revere of American Revolution fame, who besides making his "midnight ride" carrying news of the British Army's advancement he was also an exceptional silversmith.£3000-4000

*For Gresham of Titsey Place, near Oxted, Surrey. The manor was purchased by Sir John Gresham in 1534, rich mercer, Lord Mayor of London and founder of Gresham's School at Holt, Norfolk, his birthplace. His nephew, Sir Thomas Gresham was Chancellor to Elizabeth I and founder of the Royal Exchange. Sir John's eldest son, William, built a large brick & flint Elizabethan House on the present site at Titsey; this was largely demolished in the 18th century apart from a small part retained as servants' quarters at the back.
The Greshams were Royalists in the Civil War and were created baronets as a reward for their loyalty by Charles II, but there was a dramatic decline in the family fortunes during the 18th century. Sir Marmaduke Gresham, the 4th baronet let the house fall into ruin & left large debts. His eldest son died at sea in 1750 & was succeeded by his younger brother John, who fortunately married an heiress, Henrietta, daughter of Kerrick Clayton. He also inherited another fortune from his maternal uncle. In 1775, Sir John Gresham built a neat new Georgian house on the Elizabethan site & it remains the centre of the present house, & in the early 19th century the estate descended through the female line to the Leveson Gowers, a cadet branch of the family of the Dukes of Sutherland.
