TFEM GV named to 253 Cpl J W Smith 6/L'pool Regt. WW11 Certificate of Good Service with the 89th County of Lancaster (Liverpool Home Guard) dated 11th June 1942. MM L.Gazette 11/11/1916: An original document with the group states: 253 Sergt J W Smith Liverpool Regiment, 165 Infantry Brigade, 65th Division. At Guillemont Village, Somme Valley, September 1916, during a determined counter attack, this non commissioned officer, by his personal efforts and steady example, successfully kept up communications with the supporting troops, though under heavy fire from the enemy artillery, thereby enabling the commander to receive accurate information which led to the complete repulse of the attack. He had served continually with his regiment in France since February 1915. In WW11 he served with the Liverpool Home Guard being its first RSM, refusing a commission on health grounds. A copy of the 89th book and many original photographs and documents are with the group. Badges and shooting medals, 1914 Xmas tin, Certificate of Discharge etc. A soldier who gave his all in two World Wars, dying in 1946, a Liverpool Blacklegs Rifleman of 1915.
