| 126 | A CRIMEAN WAR PERIOD DIARY. The handwritten diary of Brevet Major W A Guille Royal Artillery, who died of Cholera in October 1854, in the trenches. Written between the period 20th Sept 1853 and the 14th October 1854, an insight into the Crimean War. He records the journey aboard ship to the Dardenelles, putting into Gibraltar where the ship is quarantined. (Cholera).18th August 1854. Sailing later for Istanbul, Varia Bay, Belgik Bay. On the 12th of September 1854 they saw the Crimea for the first time. Landing at Palamita Bay where 'The Cossacks had a look at us'. On the 20th September the ' Memorable Battle of Alma'. He records the Russians positioned on the heights, after a tremendous going, around 2 pm they were dragging away their guns during the retreat. His last entry was on the 14th October, he died of Cholera four days later. Approximately 170 full pages in total, 3-4 days a page on average. £300-500 |

Commissions and Officers are mentioned, also pay and transfers etc. Interestingly in one letter to Lord Rolle, the writer mentions his 'Well known liberality'. Something history tells us Lord Rolle was not often to put on show. As per his curt letter by return. One letter to Lord Rolle is from Viscount Elrington, signed Melbourne, from Whitehall 17th Jan 1831. (9 in total) £100-150 |
