Born in 1883 enlisting first in 1915 into the Army Service Corps, Alfred William Riggs was soon transferred to the Army Veterinary Corps in the same year. He rose from Private to Farrier Staff Sergeant during his four years of service in the colours. Whilst serving in Salonika he was Mentioned in Dispatches by General Milne dated 25th October 1917 (Certificate in dated Envelope) and awarded the MSM, named SE 5779 S-Smith act Farr-Sjt A W Riggs AVC. The 1914/15 Star is named SE5779 Pte A W Riggs, the War and Victory Medals are named SE-5779 S.Sjt A W Riggs.
