The 28th N Glosters saw much heavy fighting with 1 Officer Killed and 19 wounded, 29 other ranks killed and 203 wounded (taken from Mjr L L Gordons- British Battles and Medals) 557 members serving in the unit, of which 252 were casualties. The 28th served under Lt General Sir Thomas Picton, the 8th British Brigade, William Downes was in Captain Moriarty's Company. See Illustration. £1200-1500

322 A RIFLE BRIGADE MILITARY CROSS & BAR GROUP. Unamed Military Cross with second award bar, Bwm & Victory Medals named to Capt C W Tait. (3). Born 11th December 1895. Educated at Highgate School leaving in 1915 after being commissioned into the 6th Reserve Battalion. At School he was in the Shooting Eight 1911-12-13-14, (Captain of the Team.) Headboy 1914/15. Went to the front on the 15/5/1916. Awarded the Military Cross LG 19/11/17. His Bar was awarded 16/9/1918, both have Citations. An Engineer by profession after the war. LG For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. See Illustration £1700-2000

324 A ROYAL ARMY VETERINARY CORPS MSM GROUP (5) 1914/15 Star, British War and Victory Medals with MID Oakleaf on the latter, Army Meritorius Service Medal and a French cased Award. Born in 1883 enlisting first in 1915 into the Army Service Corps, Alfred William Riggs was soon transferred to the Army Veterinary Corps in the same year. He rose from Private to Farrier Staff Sergeant during his four years of service in the colours. Whilst serving in Salonika he was Mentioned in Dispatches by General Milne dated 25th October 1917 (Certificate in dated Envelope) and awarded the MSM, named SE 5779 S-Smith act Farr-Sjt A W Riggs AVC. The 1914/15 Star is named SE5779 Pte A W Riggs, the War and Victory Medals are named SE-5779 S.Sjt A W Riggs. The French Medal is unamed though the old label states on underside of case where legible SE5779 A W Riggs, Medialle de Honneur en B--. Blue/White/Red ribbon over a wreath with crossed swords, bronze disc approx 25mm in diameter, unamed. Together with original paperwork for movement and employment etc during the War Years, also an original photograph of Sjt Riggs with his wife. £200-300
