| 1225 | ATTRIBUTED TO SIR MAX BEERBOHM (1872-1956) PORTRAIT OF THE NOVELIST GEORGE MOORE (1852-1933) Bust length, coloured pastels on paper, cut and shaped, squared for transfer Image 35 x 19.5cm. *George Moore was either ignored or reviled during his lifetime. His greatest works may be "Esther Waters", "Hail and Farewell" and "The Brook Kerith" but they received little recognition during his career. This unforgiving caricature is characteristic of Beerbohm's mannered, elongated style but the technique is unusual. Beerbohm's sitters were rarely flattered by his portraits and Beerbohm was the master of the cruel putdown but he was a little kinder about Moore in prose, albeit backhandedly: "Some of the good writers have begun with a scant gift for writing. But which of them with no gift at all? Moore is the only instance I ever heard of. Somehow, in the course of long years, he learned to express himself beautifully. I call that great." The men's friendship was brittle, to say the least. Moore also sat to Manet, Sickert and Tonks. £300-400 | Laid down onto buff support sheet; slightly rubbed | Nil |

| 1244 | ATTRIBUTED TO GABRIEL METSU (1629-1667) THE CRUCIFIXION Oil on canvas 90 x 72.5cm. £25000-40000 | Condition report on request. Provenance: Private Collection for twelve years. The earlier history of the picture is uncertain but it may be the painting ("Crucifixion") formerly in the collection of Jan de Wale and subsequently sold from the home of Connilia de Wit in Amsterdam in May 1706 for 78 florins. Metsu's religious subjects fall principally into his early period prior to his more characteristic genre subjects and conversational groups. The representation of Christ on the Cross in this painting is extremely similar to the composition of identical size in the Kasteel Collection in Rome, which is signed and dated 1653 and which was exhibited in Leiden in 1966 (it was also on loan to The National Gallery of Ireland for a number of years). A later (1660's) version of the same subject by Metsu in the Capitoline Museum in Rome is also undeniably comparable. In each of these three paintings it is interesting to note that Christ's body is wounded on the left side (whereas most artists depicted the wound on the right). Strong chiaroscuro contrasts in these pictures and in other religious works of the period by Metsu suggest the Flemish influence of Rubens and Van Dyck. It is possible that the figure of St John is a self portrait of the artist. Christopher Wright examined the picture in August 2004 and, in private correspondence to the owner, confirmed the attribution to Metsu stating that he was "left in no doubt that it was an important unpublished work by Gabriel Metsu". | Nil |
