1146 RICHARD ELSAM (Exh.1797-1807) DESIGN FOR A PORTICO FOR SIR FRANCIS HOPKINS, Bart. Watercolour and pencil 36.5 x 49.5cm. Elsam was an apprentice of Robert Browne at Kew but, despite exhibiting at The Royal Academy from 1797-1807 and earning a commission to design the rebuild of Chertsey Church and then as Surveyor of Dover Gaol, he fell foul of spiralling costs on the former and exhorbitant litigation on the latter. His Essay on Rural Architecture..of 1803 is his best-known achievement but even therein he became entangled with an accusation against a noted Surveyor on a point of Building Act law. £400-600 Minor foxing; a few minor blemishes in the sky
