LANYON, Sir WILLIAM OWEN (1842 - 87). Photograph album, large 4to., cont. brown morocco gilt with his initials and crest in metal on upper cover, a.e.g. (lacks clasp). Comprising: hand painted coat-of-arms on verso of first leaf, approx. 240 small window mounted photographic portraits on thick card leaves, 4 - 6 to a page, mostly with names beneath in ms., and inset crests or monograms above, some with cut signatures, notably Field Marshal Garnet Wolseley, Sir John Peter Grant, Sir Charles Bright, and Marianne North; 8 views of public buildings in Jamaica in the 1860's (in oval mounts, 132 x 90 mm.); 3 large views of the family home The Abey, Whiteabbey, Co. Antrim (245 x 295 mm.); 2 groups of British officers in the Ashanti Campaign of 1874 and 2 of Sir William (then Major) Lanyon with Prince Coffee Intee of Ashanti. With a number of loose photographs, including one of a diamond mine.

Sir William Owen Lanyon was the son of the British architect Sir Charles Lanyon, who designed many buildings in Belfast n the 1830's and 1840's. As a British officer, he served in Jamaica during the native disturbances of 1865 and was ADC to the governor, Sir John Peter Grant between 1868 - 73, and subsequently ADC to Wolseley during the Ashanti campaign. He was administrator of the Transvaal, 1879 - 81 and took part in the Anglo-Egyptian war of 1882.

The album has descended in the family of Sir William's sister Mary, who married the barrister F.W. Hollams.

AUSTRALIA. Collection of drawings, mainly by Eliza, Lady Hodgson, but including an example by Conrad Martens, and another attributed to him.
Comprising: Martens, Conrad. "Eton Vale Arthur Hodgson Esq.", signed and dated 1853. Pencil with ink highlights. 21 x 32.5 cms. Two Cottages, pencil with grey wash highlights. 16.5 x 23.5 cms., unsigned. Unframed.

Hodgson, Arthur ? "Head Station Eton Vale Darling Downs", December 1st 1841, inscribed thus on reverse. Pencil drawing, framed, 19.5 x 31 cms. An important sketch, showing bales of wool produced during the second shearing season at Eton Vale, with details of the buildings, two drays, and bar probably used for hanging up the carcases of slaughtered animals etc.

Group of nine sepia and wash drawings, various sizes, unframed: From Sandygate, Queensland August 1868; Westbrook, Darling Downs, Queensland January 1869; Westbrook and Mr. Maclean's Monument, n.d. (J.D. Maclean, Colonial Treasurer of Queensland); Eton Vale looking towards the Range, Darling Downs; Eton Vale from the hill behind, Sept. 1868; Goomburra from the house, Darling Downs, August 1869; Goomburra looking to the house, August 1869; Moray Fields, Cabulture River Sugar plantation October 1868; From the veranda, Montpelier House, Brisbane, n.d.; two small watercolours of Clarence and Rocky River (Queensland); group of six pencil drawings, various sizes, unframed, including Brisbane October 1850, and another of the Mayor's Residence and Hospital, and 7 others, probably by other hands, including views of Brisbane and Eton Vale. The view of Brisbane dated 1850 is particularly valuable for the topographical information at this early date. The building in the centre is typical of those built about 1827 by the convicts with tiny window frames which were superceded about 1829.

Conrad Martens (1801 - 78), landscape watercolourist who studied under Copley Fielding. He sailed with Darwin on the second voyage of the Beagle in 1833, leaving the ship at Valparaiso, and arriving in Sydney in 1835 where he achieved instant success as a landscape artist. He gave drawing lessons to Eliza Hodgson.

1. Thirteen views of Australia, various sizes, including large scene of copper mining; Eton Vale, the Hodgson sheep station; Drayton in the Darling Downs; Princess Royal Harbour June 1861; "Where the Dunbar was wrecked - Sept. 1857"; cottages in Clopton Street, and Hume Street, Toowoomba by E.J. Dann; and steam sheep washing probably at Eton Vale (a practice apparently discontinued there in 1883). With another, defective.

2. Five loose photographs of prize winning sheep and five further prints in one mount of champions bred by the Hodgson family at the R.A. Society's Show Toowoomba 1899. Various sizes.

3. Ten family portraits by British photographers including Elliott and Fry, of Sir Arthur and Lady Hodgson; their Golden Wedding group, 1892 etc. Various sizes.

4. Group of 29 small photographs [mostly 74 x 93 mm.] taken by members of the family on a visit to Australia in 1925 - 26, mostly captioned on reverse including views of engineering works on the Murray river relating to the flood diversion scheme.

HODGSON FAMILY. Eleven mid 19th c. daguerrotype portrait photographs (one damaged) of Sir Arthur Hodgson, his wife Eliza, and their children. With miniature watercolour of Eliza, and folded note by the subject "For dear Sir Arthur. The likeness of the girl he proposed to, and lately found among some papers. The most successful attempt of my girlhood. It could be photographed and coloured by a good artist." All cased, 2 of them with gilt Stamp of Freeman Brothers Sydney. (12)

Printed pages pasted into notebook with manuscript amendments and additions; "A Voyage Round the World in 1866", draft and a later version of the first part; the Paris Exhibition of 1878 and another on The Forests and Historic Trees of Great Britain, in one volume. With his commonplace book dated 1849.

Dowling, Sir James (1787 - 1844, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and Sir Arthur's father-in-law). The Australian Diary and Almanac for the Year 1844, Sydney. Printed diary with brief manuscript daily entries, and further notes by his second wife, Harriet, following his death on 27th September of that year. 8vo., orig. cloth (loose in binding).

Partial manuscript account of a boyhood journey from Australia to England, January - March 1860, by Francis H. Silver Napoleon III Paris 1867 Exposition medallion, 37mm. diam.; silver Imperial Institute medallion, 1887, drilled at top centre, both contained in round Waterlow and Sons Ltd. cardboard box; a bronze Golden Jubilee 1887 medallion, 45 mm. diam. Thomas Henry Goodwin Newton, Sheriff County of Warwick; a bronze Colonial and Indian exhibition, London, 1886 medallion. 52 mm. diam.; a silver Chancellor of Cambridge medallion, (1862), 45mm. diam. Gulielmus Cavendish Devonia Dux [the Duke of Devonshire was Chancellor of the University]; a large bronze medallion, 1862 International Exhibition prize medal. Britannia seated obverse with female figures. 76mm. diam. Named on the rim, Mrs. Hodgson Class IV; a bronze New South Wales medallion, 1862 to the Prize Exhibitors, designed by W. Kullrich, with Ceres obverse, and the reverse with kneeling female figure at the feet of Britannia, wool bales and a merchant ship. 76 mm. diam. Named to A. Hodgson "Iron Ores"; a bronze French Exposition, 1878 medallion. The obverse figures include Marianne and Mercury, the reverse with angels unfurling a scroll. Inside the case reads, "Medaille Commemorative Offerte pour Services Rendus Arthur Hodgson Esq., C.M.G. Commissionaire de Queensland"; Primrose League medal, brass and enamel on ribbon (damaged), "Imperium et Libertas". Mostly cased. (9)
