| 1323 | JULIAN TREVELYAN, RA (1910-1988) TISBURY Signed and dated 37, watercolour with pen and black ink and collage 35.5 x 53.5cm. Provenance: Alex. Reid & Lefevre Ltd (label on backboard); A gift from the artist to the vendor's aunt in 1937; given by the aunt to the vendor upon her wedding in 1952 The 1930's were fertile years for Trevelyan. He had benefitted enormously from three years at Stanley Hayter's printing studio, Atelier 17, in Paris (1931-1934) and had met Klee, Picasso, Ernst and Miro there from whom he had learnt a great deal about the growth of Abstraction in Continental Europe. Upon his return, he showed with Eileen Agar at the International Surrealist Exhibition of 1936 and demonstrated a sounder grasp of the tenets of Surrealism than many of his British contemporaries. In addition, he became involved with the curious Mass Observation Movement that also brought him into contact with the expressive, naive realism of coal miners, bus drivers and other non-professional artists in the Ashington Group. Few that there are, Trevelyan's collages are regarded nonetheless as a critical part of his development as an artist. An untitled example from 1938 was shown in A Salute to British Surrealism 1930-1950 (Colchester, London and Hull, 1985) whilst "Coalmine" (1937) was still in the artist's possession when it was shown at the important Fifty Years of British Art exhibition at The Tate Gallery in 1964. The appeal of such playful images is that they gather together so many strands of Trevelyan's artistic development in the 1930's. In them, we see his adaptation of Cubism in the angular layouts; his acknowledgement of Surrealism in the shifting perspectives and the other-worldly atmosphere; his pleasure in producing technically unsophisticated images that have the childlike exuberance he so admired amongst the artists of the Ashington Group; and the gathering of random fragments from other people's lives (evidenced by the scraps of collage) that was the principal ambition of the Mass Observation Movement. £8000-12000 |
