DAVID COX (1783-1859)
VIEW OF THE CITY OF BATH FROM BEACON HILL
Watercolour over pencil with scratching out, stopping out and gum arabic
71 x 104cm.
Exhibited: London, Society of Painters in Watercolour, 1820, no.228

* This magnificent view dates from Cox's return visit to Bath in 1819 (after tours of North Wales and the Wye Valley) and is one of his largest watercolours. The view looks left down to the River Avon with Laura Place and Great Pulteney Street behind. Beyond that is North Parade, Bath Abbey and the tower of Old St. Michael's Church at the centre of the composition. Lansdowne Crescent is visible on the right and a new road and buildings are under construction in the foreground.
Mallalieu observes that Cox's middle period from c.1820-1840 is characterised by his mastery of colour, albeit with a limited palette.
