HEAD OF CHRIST
Signed and dated 51, gouache
74 x 54.5cm.
Exhibited: London, Beaux Arts, whereat purchased by the vendor in 1993
In 1951, Frink was mid way through her studies at the Chelsea School of Art where she studied under Bernard Meadows and Willi Soukop (see lots 2294-2295). Within a year, the Beaux Arts Gallery in London mounted her first solo exhibition, the Tate Gallery purchased a bird sculpture and Frink's career was underway.
The deep but understated emotion of the male face was a defining and dominant feature of her later sculptures of warriors and helmeted heads that explored themes of vulnerability, compassion, suffering, redemption and strength. Here it is explored at a formative stage in her artistic development. She uses strong contrasts of colour and an intense, focused handling of the medium of gouache that captures anguish in an Expressionist palette.
Themes of Christ's Passion were an enduring inspiration to Frink: her last work, unveiled just a week before she died, was the bronze of `Risen Christ` at Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral.

SUNDAY MORNING; A COTTAGE FAMILY GOING TO CHURCH
Signed and dated 1794, oil on canvas
99.5 x 125cm.
Exhibited: London, The Royal Academy, 1793, no.58
Engraved: in stipple, by W. Nutter, 1795 (a copy of which accompanies this lot)
Bigg revered the humble, family-orientated life of the cottage dweller. His works from the 1790's show a sustained interest in blending the virtues of honest labour with the concerns of selfless assistance to others: "The Benevolent Heir Restoring an Old Cottager, Confined for Debt, to his Family" (1797) is typical of Bigg's work of the period whilst other compositions such as "Saturday Morning: Favourite Chickens going to Market" (1791) and "Saturday Evening, with the Husbandman's Return from his Labour" (1792) suggest a themed suite of `weekend` pictures to complement this subject.
The rustic family in this picture appears to be implausibly well-dressed and refined. Bigg does not hesitate to show care and compassion within this domestic scene: note the little girl with a stick directing the dog away from her grandfather's sore leg as the man's head is wrapped in a scarf by the mother. Two prayer books and a Bible reflect the atmosphere of piety and the gentle concern shown in ensuring that the frail patriarch is taken to church with the minimum of discomfort.
Bigg's moralizing subjects found unexpected favour in America and copies of his works (including this one) are to be found in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, having been removed from Oak Hill Mansion in Salem, Massachusetts (the interiors of which were furnished in 1800-1801).
A print of this subject, from the British Museum Collection, was exhibited at "Rustic Simplicity: Scenes of Cottage Life in 19th Century British Art" (Nottingham, 1998)

2140. CIRCLE OF CHARLES BROOKING (1723-1759)
A FLAGSHIP WEARING A FLAG OF THE VICE ADMIRAL OF THE RED, BEFORE THE WIND
Oil on canvas
70 x 125cm.
This subject derives from Brooking's enormous and celebrated masterpiece, 175 x 307 cm, painted for The Foundling Hospital in 1754 and still in its collection in a frame designed by William Hogarth. The commission and execution of the vast canvas, painted in just 18 days, earned Brooking the governorship of the Hospital.
Although the subject was never engraved, other copies exist and are cited in David Joel's monograph of Charles Brooking and the 18th Century British Marine Painters (Woodbridge, 2000). No other hitherto recorded version is as large as this example and some are as small as 24 x 37cm.
The Red Squadron, distinguished by its ensign, was the most senior of the three squadrons in the Royal Navy and its Vice-Admiral was the fourth most senior officer in the whole fleet. Joel's research has concluded that no Vice-Admiral of the Red flew his flag in a two-decker between 1744 and 1754. Nonetheless, Brooking has been careful to show the vessel with 26 guns on the gun deck. There are 28 guns on the upper deck and this can relate only to the ship named Torbay
Brooking is generally acknowledged as the most talented British marine painter of his era. He drew heavily on Dutch influences (notably the Van de Velde family's work) but also formulated his own style, characterised by soft clouds and sinuous seas painted with fluency and assurance. Similarly, his vessels were observed with "accuracy, delicacy and without apparent effort" (National Maritime Museum catalogue, 1982). Brooking died in poverty at the age of just 36, having failed to achieve any notable commercial success during his brief but impressive career.
A pair to this picture, subject unknown, was seized by the German occupiers of Jethou in the Channel islands during the Second World War.

Fisher gave London and Surrey addresses when he exhibited at the Royal Academy (57 works between 1882 and 1930) with the exception of "The English Club, Venice" from 1886-1891. In later years, he specialised in Capri scenes but he favoured Italian subjects in the spirit of artists such as Giovanni Battista Torriglia (1858-1937), Eugenio Zampighi (1859-1944) and Eugene de Blaas (1843-1931) whilst his later acknowledgement of British Impressionism suggests a familiarity with the work of Henry Herbert La Thangue (1859-1929). The strongly anecdotal themes combine skilful composition with engaging personalities.

Henriette Ronner's Europe-wide renown rested upon her anthropomorphic pictures of dogs and cats in appealingly childlike situations as much as it did upon the patronage that she secured from noble and illustrious collectors: kings, emperors, princesses and duchesses all collected her work and thereby gave it a worthy artistic integrity to augment its charms. However, such acclaim did not belittle Ronner's talent for she was a member of many prestigious artistic societies in the Nertherlands and was awarded medals at exhibitions in Philadelphia, Amsterdam and Edinburgh between 1876 and 1883.

Bratby's early kitchen still lifes from the mid-1950's, inspired much more by Van Gogh than by Chardin, were described by Sir John Rothenstein as "tough, larger-and-uglier-than-life [views] of his intimate environment" but were summarily dismissed as "Kitchen Sink School" by his critics. After his marriage to Jean Cooke broke down in the late 1960's, Bratby's obsession with his immediate surroundings took a lighter tone as his subsequent marriage to Patty Prime yielded a less anguished domestic environment.
