Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter. £800-1200 | Good condition. Price sat to Sir Thomas Lawrence c.1795 and the resulting oil painting is now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts (see Garlick 664). This drawing depicts the sitter at a slightly greater age and may be dated to c.1800-1805 (as an inscription on the backboard suggests). Price was an important proponent of the "Picturesque" (as a quality distinct from mere beauty or grandeur) and his Essay on the Picturesque, As Compared With The Sublime and The Beautiful (1794) was an important contribution to the subject. It led to a public debate with Humphrey Repton and a subtle parody in Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. After Eton and before Oxford, the young Price inherited the wealth of the family estate, Foxley, in 1768 upon the death of his father. A lively society figure, Price nonetheless settled into marital life and studied the pronunciation of the Classical languages. He enjoyed friendships with Sir George Beaumont, Charles James Fox, William Wordsworth and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. | Nil |
