1115 DAVID COX (1783-1859) A VIEW ON THE THAMES WITH WESTMINSTER ABBEY, FIGURES IN A PUNT IN THE FOREGROUND Signed D. Cox (on foreshore, lower right), watercolour and pencil heightened with scratching out 18.5 x 26cm. Provenance: Private Collection, Somerset * Stylistically, this view dates from Cox's residency in London between 1826 and 1841 and can be dated more precisely by the absence of the old Houses of Parliament, destroyed by fire on October 16th 1834. The new Palace of Westminster, designed by Sir Charles Barry, opened in 1844 but was not completed until 1870. Boatmen in punts and small craft were a regular sight on the Thames as the next river crossing west of Westminster was the old wooden Battersea Bridge at Cheyne Walk, built in c.1771. £7000-9000 Good colour; silverfish damage, particularly apparent in the sky
