358 WAR DIARIES. The Second World War Diaries of Albert Hird, 1939 - 45 and continuation to 1951. Numerous pages, typescript with a few pp. in ms., contained in envelopes within two cardboard boxes. Albert Hird worked in the newsroom of the Daily Express throughout the war and was therefore well placed to assess the news of a political, social and military nature. These diaries are interesting from the point of view of a well informed but essentially oridinary man. In September 1939 he writes, "Our military people must have known that without the help of Russia our guarantee to Poland, as Lloyd George said in the House at the time - was completely valueless, because there was no way in which we could send her aid. I personally think there has been a great deal of double dealing by Chamberlain..." Jan. 8th 1940. "Unity Mitford returned to Britain this week - the Express had a clear beat through a stranger who came on to the telephone one morning. We offered Lord Redesdale £5000 for her story, and I think it would be well worth it, but he refused to accept." 5th Jan. 1941. Writing about the blitz, "I think that a large proportion of the damage, some people put it as high as half - was due to the old fatal British weekend habit, as a result of which the majority of city buildings had no fire watchers on duty." 26th Dec. 1942. "If one thing more than anything else has marked this Christmas it has been the orgy of spending by all classes. Restraint was completely thrown to the winds..." In 1943 he is much exercised with the Beveridge report and plans for a post war Britain. "There is in fact more and more of a suspicion growing that if the last world war was fought to make the world safe for democracy then this one is being fought to make the world safe for Wall Street and the American investors." In September 1944 his world is shattered by the news that his son Geoffrey, a 21 year old Lieutenant, has been killed in Belgium. "This diary was compiled specially for his benefit...What can a man say who has lost his only son on whom he pinned such great hopes?" £150-250
